The Tenant by Freida McFadden
Tenant - Such a non-threatening word. A tenant is someone you share your space or your home with. And you have expectations that they will respect your personal space as much as you will respect theirs. You also hope to god that they are somehow well behaved, polished and do not cause you any trauma.
Unfortunately, the tenant in this Freida McFadden's story is anything but.
Blake Porter has the best job in the industry. His stars are really shining down upon him. He has an amazing home and a loving girl friend - fiancee, Krista. Who would not feel good about it? But, luck is a mean thing. It can be on your s ide one moment and against you the other. You cannot question luck.
In the blink of an eye, Blake's life changes beyond repair. One unfateful day, he is summoned by his boss only to be fired. Money is now going to be a hassle. How was he going to pay the mortgage of his beautiful house? Krista suggests that they could sell her diamond engagement ring and run the show for a while. Obviously, Blake is not going to do that. So he is compelled to put her either idea into action - find a tenant. Reluctantly, Blake meets prospective tenants. He does not like most of them. Finally, one tenant sort of fits the bill - Whitney.
Life is slowly settling for these people. But, there are somethings which are not going quite right. Blake is having unnecessary spats with his neighbour, an old man; his tenant is resorting to take an arm, when offered a finger. Something is not right. Why have things gone awry since Whitney came in to stay with Blake and Krista? Things are slowly getting out of hand. Blake's frustration and anger is now bubbling up to something else. He is constantly fighting with this new tenant, which looks idiotic and uncalled for.
So what does Whitney have against Blake? Why is she giving him a hard time? Was it the right decision to have Whitney as a tenant? Or was it a big mistake? Or was there something else brewing that was much more sinister than we can imagine?
Will Damron's narration was a welcome change. I like male narrators who can enact and narrate as make it sound as though the situation were happening in my neighbourhood. I liked this book and could not guess the ending. I listened to it on Audible and could not stop! I was listening to it every waking moment.
Definitely a good one.
