The Crash by Freida McFadden
How can everything, you possibly think of, be going wrong?
A very young Tegan is almost 8 months pregnant. One bad decision and one bad moment has brought her to this situation. Wanting to get a break, Tegan plans to go visit her brother Dennis, a ski instructor. She was tired of having discussions with her unborn baby's father and his associate, Jackson about child support and all those things. They want to give her some money but suddenly Tegan remembers something and refuses to back down on the maintenance amount she was initially fighting to get.
On the way to meet Dennis, Tegan meets with an accident and is stranded in the middle of nowhere. With a storm brewing and alert warnings to steer clear off the road, Tegan realizes she has hurt her ankle and is unable to get herself out of the car. With depleting energy, she is forced to take the help of Hank, a neighbour from the vicinity. Hank assures Tegan that she was safe with him and he was taking her home to rest and recuperate until the weather got better.
What ensues in Hank's home with his wife Polly, is unbelievable. Unknowingly Tegan lands in a home that has taken her hostage! Yes, you read that right. Hostage.
Who is holding Tegan hostage and why?
What is the motive behind this hostage situation?
Who are involved? I am sure there may have been better ways to address this, but...
The Crash is a lot of monologue. It's each character's perspective of the situation. It's not boring; just makes you feel slightly agitated initially that you are unable to understand why one character would need to talk so much! Until Chapter 16 you wonder what is wrong and then that slow reveal of the why and how is worth the wait. What meets the eye does not necessarily have to be the truth, does it?
To know how Tegan manages to get out of the situation, you will have to read or listen to Freida McFadden's The Crash. What started off as a fight with one set of people, completely took a wrong turn and crashed straight into the hands of people out of the blue! Considering the way most thrillers are ending their stories in a rush lately, this one is not bad at all. After all that drama, one deserves a fair close!
