When Things Don't Go Your Way by Haemin Sunim

I have come to love such books. Books, that I can leave on the coffee table and not worry where I have left off. I don't have to necessarily start reading under any pressure and I don't have to keep at it because a plot twist is round the line.

Apart from great storytelling, books hold the responsibility to keep our minds working. It helps keep the grey cells working and allowing imagination to take wings and fly to distant lands without much ado. Then sometimes, after a tiring day, if you want to sit and just not think, if you want to simply look into the skies or watch the day go about you, you might want to pick up this or such books for comfort and company.

This beautiful book has some learning which does not sound like gyan. It does not preach how to become perfect, because we are all beautifully imperfect and flawed. It suggests how and what we can do when things don't go our way. Maybe difficult times show us our capabilities and strength. This book will act as a reminder that life is not as bad as it seems. You may find some solace when you reflect through Sunim's kind and relatable words.

"Don't seek validation from other. Instead, take a journey of self-discovery and let yourself be your own validator. Reflect on your accomplishments and strengths, appreciate your kindness and creativity, and understand your true needs and values. Develop a sense of self-worth that is independent of other's opinions."

According to Korean Buddhist adage, we are advised:

"Neither hinder those who seek to come, nor grasp those who wish to leave. By embracing an attitude of acceptance, we can avoid needless heartache and wasted efforts, and instead find peace in the natural flow of life."

This book is now by my bedside. I read a para or two and allow it soak into my mind. I am then somewhat more accepting of life and I am able to send some of this energy to others who are in need.
