The Apartment by K L Slater
Freya Miller has just been dealt with life's terrible cards - 18 months ago, her husband had chosen to get into an affair and few months post that, he had met his end.
Freya is now running helter skelter with her 5-year old daughter Skye, trying to find a good place to call home. She cannot believe her luck when one day, at a coffee shop, she has been, very casually, approached by a respectable looking man, Dr Marsden. He had an offer, only a fool would refuse. He lived on an amazing property, which had multiple apartments within itself and he was looking for a tenant who would fit into that ambience. Freya is reeling in doubt of how someone could offer her a place to live, that too in the poshest areas of London and for a rental price that was equivalent to peanuts!
When life offers way too many lemons, you are forced to feel bitter and wary of people and circumstances. You are always doubtful of people's intentions and why you were being offered something good, which you probably didn't deserve in the first place.
51 chapters short, Freya moves into this apartment and she just cannot believe her luck. Soon, this luck turns sour when she encounters odd sounds and behaviour of people around her. Not wanting to be cynical, she let's it go but all is obviously not going well. She thought she and Skye could be happy here and start life afresh, but that does not seem very possible. Not with the odd things going on.
What really is going on in this Adder House? Who are these other tenants who live there who are so mysterious? Why did they offer such an expensive property to Freya - a total stranger? Are Freya and Skye in danger of some sort? Is there something else going on under the garb of just simple tenancy?
The Apartment is not a place, a story I took to very much. I did not like the constant disdain and fear which was the crux of the story. It's an uneasy feeling. This was a quick read and not my kind of "psychological thriller". I was expecting something a little more sinister for it to become a thriller, but was left a little disappointed. I wish the ending could have been dealt with a little better and woven better into the storyline.
I'm not a critical reader and do have respect for authors who put their heart and soul into writing. Maybe K L Slater needed to do a little more work on this one. And maybe, I am just a little tired of the marathon readings I have suddenly gotten myself into. Ah well!
